Vintage Shops to Know on Instagram

Me holding a beach bag I scored from Vacation Vintage!

Last month I shared some of my favorite ethical fashion brands with you. After that post, I got to thinking that I should also highlight some of my favorite vintage shops! I love to support and follow other small businesses like mine from all around the country online! With that in mind, here are my top picks for the vintage shops to know on Instagram!

I just recently made my first purchase from this Atlanta-based instashop. I love their selection and the way they effortlessly present their pieces. Clean lines and feminine touches make Vacation Vintage a favorite of mine to follow and shop from! I also like that they offer a wide range of sizes for many body types.

California-based Blossom Vintage is definitely one that I admire and look up to. Their selection is so romantic and ethereal but still maintains a bit of funk which I'm really drawn to. I've made several purchases and will continue to do so. I'm constantly looking to their Instagram for inspiration.

Portland's I Am That is probably the most well-known shop on my list. This brand is extremely unique with the execution of their work. It is clear that they pour everything into what they do and that shines through in the art direction of their Instagram account. I'm always excited to see what they are going to come up with next!

I met Yana and Ian of Moth Oddities, a Minneapolis-based online shop, a few years ago while they were on a cross country road trip. On their stop in Austin we collaborated on a lookbook together and it was so much fun! Not only do these two have a really cool, eclectic selection of killer vintage, but they are also some of the nicest people I know. Plus, they win cutest vintage couple award hands down!

Down House is run by two genderqueer individuals who aren't afraid to share their anti-Trump political beliefs. Not many vintage sellers do that on Instagram so it's refreshing to see them pushing the envelope. They also have an amazing selection and I really admire their art direction -- Everything they post is pristinely executed and well thought out. They even have a sister shop called 7 Gemini that I love as well!

There are so many amazing vintage shops out there but I hope I've listed some here that you hadn't yet discovered. Go check them out for some seriously beautiful vintage clothing!

My Favorite Ethical Fashion Brands

April Onebane

The main way I like to shop for my wardrobe is, of course, through purchasing vintage and secondhand. I also do my best to shop with local Austin businesses. There's one other way that I think many people aren't as aware of and that's shopping from ethical brands. By definition an ethical brand "aims to address the problems it sees with the way the fashion industry currently operates, such as exploitative labour, environmental damage, the use of hazardous chemicals, waste, and animal cruelty." (via Victoria and Albert Museum)

Sustainable and slow-fashion also fall under the ethical fashion umbrella, but I'll leave the definitions of these for another post. Here are some of my favorite ethical fashion brands!

Everlane is by far my favorite ethical fashion brand. Affordability in ethical fashion is still hard to come by, but Everlane is paving the way in this area. They have amazing basics and denim at very reasonable prices. They're also doing some really inspiring things to create awareness on their social media platforms, making them my favorite brand to follow on Instagram. Definitely give them a follow (and don't sleep on their Insta stories; they're so good)!

ABLE (formerly fashionable)

My favorite products from ABLE are their leather goods. I have an amazing leather tote bag from them that I carry my computer and work materials in pretty much everyday. They are a bit pricey but I saved up and bought this bag as a Christmas gift to myself a couple of years ago. If you're looking for beautifully crafted leather goods made by women who have overcome extraordinary circumstances, ABLE is for you.

UNravel Co

Of course I had to include a local Austin brand! As a small local business owner I make it a point to support other small businesses in Austin. Unravel Co is a new sustainable brand started by my former assistant, Sanetra Longno. As Sanetra was working with me last year, she was also developing her brand, so I have seen Unravel Co unfold from the very beginning. Sanetra works with artisans in Ghana who handcraft her gorgeous woven bags and a percentage of sales go back into the community there. I'm planning on purchasing the Baba basket this summer!

A more well known brand that I love is Reformation, but did you even know that it's ethical? I didn't until early last year. What I like about Reformation is that they have options! Many ethical brands have quite a small selection of only certain types of products (which for the record, I also appreciate), whereas Reformation has it all - clothing, swim, bags, shoes, wedding wear, accessories and even a petites line!

Gone are the days of those cheap, uncomfortable lace panties from Victoria's Secret that fall apart after a couple of wears! The worst. Ethical underwear is here and Pansy is just one of my many favorite brands making it happen! I have the matching bra and low rise underwear set in rust from them that I absolutely love and they are both so, so comfy. Organic USA cotton, made in California, and female-owned. Nothing better.

I would like to note that these are just some my favorite brands that I have personal experience with. There is a very extensive, well researched list of ethical brands over on The Peahen and also a shorter list of local Austin ethical brands on the Purse & Clutch site. I encourage you to go check them out!

If you haven't shopped ethically yet, what are you wait for? Our planet will thank you for it!

How I Became a Vintage Seller

April Onebane

Well hello there! We decided it was probably about time to get this whole blog thing started so, welcome to our very first blog post!

I'm April, owner of Pieceology Vintage. I wanted this first post to be an introduction about how I became a vintage seller and started my shop. But first, let me give you the lowdown of what you will be able to find here at the Pieceology Vintage blog.

My hope is that this blog will be a source of inspiration for you. We will feature DIYs, styled shoots, lookbook previews, Pinterest faves, and talk about sustainable fashion and how you can get the most out of your favorite vintage pieces + much, much more!

OK, now back to the subject of this post! So, how did I become a vintage seller? Well, it’s a pretty serendipitous story actually.

I used to have a fashion blog and I wanted to expand my knowledge of social media in an effort to grow it. I ended up stumbling upon a social media workshop being hosted by one of my favorite boss lady's, Justina Blakeney, which just so happened to be taking place in Italy during the same time I was traveling there back in the summer of 2015. I couldn't pass up the chance to go to it! The timing was way too perfect.

While at the workshop I met a fellow attendee who had recently started a vintage wholesale business marketing to sellers in the U.S. I'd always wanted to open my own clothing shop and I'd always loved vintage, but never knew where to start, until then. Attending that workshop and meeting my new friend created the opportunity for me to become a vintage seller and start Pieceology Vintage.

Since then, I've learned a heck of a lot about this industry and have loved every second of it!

Stay tuned for more from our blog. We are so excited to have this outlet to share all the things with you!

P.S. Thanks to my friend Diana Ascarrunz for these gorgeous film photos of me!
